Patriotic Picture Books

These books are some of the most beautiful tear-jerking, heartwarming, hope-filling ones I’ve read.
They truly define the American spirit in every word and illustration.

You can purchase them from either Amazon or Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores!

Make sure to read my reviews to know the plot before you buy!

I do make a small commission from the books on this page, at no additional cost to you!

Rolling Thunder by Kate Messner and Greg Ruth

Every Memorial Day, more than a million veterans and patriots gather in Washington D.C. for the Rolling Thunder Ride for Freedom. Thousands of shining bikes, rolling, rumbling, riding. In memory of many, in honor of all. Join a boy and his grandpa on their journey to the wonderful event.

The illustrations are GORGEOUS. The shading, detailing, and character expressions are beautiful! They’re my favorite pictures on this page!

Imogene’s Last Stand by Candace Fleming and Nancy Carpenter

Imogene LOVES history! Her first words were “Four score and seven years ago." So, naturally, when the mayor wants to tear down the town’s historical society…she’s MAD. Fightin’ mad. Join Imogene on her quest to keep the historical society up and flourishing!

I love Imogene’s never-give-up attitude and spunky spirit! She’s such a fun character <3

The Scarlet Stockings Spy

This book is the most special one to me on this page. The illustrations are so stinkin’ sweet! You can feel the connection between the characters come through the pages

The story structure is simple enough for little ones but holds enough meaning to be a great read for more independent readers. Dad By My Side beautifully depicts the relationship between a dad and daughter and how they help each other through the happy and sad times <3

This cute story follows two mice, Littletail and Longtail, as they play hide-and-seek in the forest.

I picked this one up at a used book sale and I’m so happy that I did because it’s adorable! The texture in the pictures from the colored pencil is amazing!

Let Freedom Ring?

Get ready to give the gift of laughter this Father’s Day! There’s a dad joke in here for every day of the year, be careful! Mom might roll her eyes!

“What rock group has four men who don’t sing? Mount Rushmore.”

“If athletes get athlete’s foot, what do elves get? Mistle-toes.”

Tucky Jo and Little Heart by Patricia Polacco

This is a true story about a WW2 veteran named Johnnie Wallen. ('Tucky Jo') He enlists in the army young and gets deployed overseas. While in the woods, he sees a little girl, Little Heart, and finds that her village has been through a lot. Tucky Jo's heart is softened at the sight of the village, and sets off to help them with some of their troubles.

This book makes me teary every time I read it, so make sure to have some tissues nearby <3

Twenty-One Steps by Jeff Gottesfeld and Matt Tavares

Twenty-one steps. Then a pause. Then twenty-one more. Repeat until it is time to change shifts. Another guard takes over. Repeat.

Twenty-one steps. On repeat.

I’ve read quite a few picture books about The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, but this is by far my favorite. I always end up teary. The combination of the stunning illustrations and beautiful words is absolutely perfect.

The Poppy Lady by Barbara Elizabeth Walsh and Layne Johnson

Poppies are synonymous with veterans. But have you ever wondered how that came to be? It’s all thanks to Moina Belle Michael, a school teacher who lived through WWI. Her inspiring story is told in this wonderful book.

I had never heard of Moina Bella before reading this - I’m so happy I picked it up! Her story is truly amazing.

Ben’s Revolution

These ILLUSTRATIONS?! Cutest on the page, for sure! The soft coloring and precious animals make it a favorite for many!

My dad and I always cackle at these jokes - they’re just so ridiculous!

“To whoever stole my copy of Microsoft office, I will find you. You have my word.”

“A police officer found two kids playing with a firework and a car battery. He charged one and let the other one off.”

These books would make great read-alouds, especially the biographies of founding fathers and other important historical figures. Some of these books contain difficult topics, so make sure your child is ready for those discussions. <3

The Wall

Join two bears as they romp around the woods and the surrounding area! They’ll dance in the rain, visit birds’ nests, and more!

This book is similar to I Love My Daddy that I linked a couple rows up, but they definitely have their differences. If your little one loves bears then they would make a great gift pair!
